Conscious Leadership Interviews
Conscious Leadership: The Key to unlocking success! By Chutisa and Steven Bowman, Major Contribution by Gary Douglas
Interviews with The 2 Bowmans
What prompted you to write the book ‘Conscious Leadership: the key to unlocking success’?
Steven: We have been working with CEOs, Boards, and leadership teams around the word, and discovered that there is so much confusion and myths about leadership and about what it takes to be a great leader. Every organization knows the importance of high quality leadership to organizational accomplishment; nevertheless most of them still find effective leadership elusive. They are struggling more than ever to solve the ambiguity of successful leadership.
Chutisa The explosion of leadership training has done nothing to alleviate this. Executives we have worked with informed us that they thought that once they went to leadership training they would become great leaders. But they found that this is not true. The end result from this training seems to be rather mediocre, and most of the time, outcomes are not evident and hard to measure. We have been asked by our clients over and over again “What else is possible and what is it going to take for us to become more gifted leaders?
Steven: We are constantly approached by clients to put together a different form of leadership training program that facilitates their executive teams to lead with awareness. This prompted us to explore the question “What is extraordinary leadership and what does it take to become an extraordinary leader?” The deeper we delved into what makes extraordinary leaders, the more we realized that leadership can not be taught to a person in a fixed compilation of tools and techniques, or delivered via a series of seminars and lectures. We became aware that leadership is a process of ‘Being’ rather than ‘Doing’. This establishes the quality, attitude and disposition which delineate extraordinary leaders. This book came about because we recognized that cultivating the beingness is not about teaching skill sets, it must be experienced, not taught.
Chutisa We wrote this book because there is a requirement for a different kind of leadership book that addresses the question “What would it take to lead with conscious awareness?” This book invites people to recognize that it is possible to develop leadership potential from a different place. The ideas and practices in our “Conscious Leadership’ book are about creating life from choice and infinite possibilities.
What is the difference between Conscious Leadership and other types of leadership philosophy?
Chutisa We discovered that most of the available training and books on leadership seem to focus on the DOINGNESS and not the BEINGNESS of leadership. They tend to focus on leadership styles, tools, techniques based on conventional models for leading people. These tools provide the means and methods to perform as a leader but not to truly BE a leader. Contrary to what many people think, leadership is not about a set of skills and learned behaviour. It is not something that can bestowed, awarded, appointed, presented as part of the job, and it is not about having power over people.
Steven: Many of these conventional leadership models require leaders to sustain a controlled structure in which staff follow specified directives and perform them efficiently and in an approved manner. The tools and techniques that are provided by conventional leadership training often are effectively the instruments that can be used to control and have power over people. These tools and techniques simply provide great psychological methods to enable the exertion of control. In this way, leadership is perceived to be power-based.
Chutisa Our book ‘Conscious Leadership’ presents the philosophy for living and perceiving the world, based on a foundation of expanded consciousness and our own business experience. This book has not been written from an expert point of view that provides all of the answers for you. The aim was to present a different way of looking at leadership that facilitates a highly personal experience for the reader. From this place readers can discover who they are, what limitations they have, what they believe, and how their actions affect others.
Steven: This book is a gift to every individual, leader and organization dedicated to creating a life that is greater than what they now have, and to making a difference in the world. It provides Access Energy for Transformation tools that can unlock and open doors for leaders to be more conscious. The book invites leaders to become conscious of and shift any part of their reality that isn't working. It shows leaders how to make the personal journey towards becoming powerful and conscious leaders. This book has been created to convey at a macro level the beingness and tools for all leaders and businesses endeavouring to become more conscious.
How can leaders and future leaders implement the notions from your book?
Steven: In this book, readers will become familiar with conscious leadership best practice. They will become aware of the characteristics of conscious, unconscious and anticonscious leaders, which will allow them to see clearly where they are now as a leader. Then they can choose to expand their conscious leadership potency with awareness. Consciousness is a choice, just as unconscious and anticonscious are choices. Leader can choose to be conscious, unconscious or anticonscious. Being conscious is the very process of expansion; it has nothing to do with new age concepts, the latest fads, or any “should” or “shouldn’t” beliefs. It is the capacity to perceive, know, be and receive everything and to include everything without judgment.
ChutisaThe conscious leadership practices are not about making piecemeal changes and they are not about self improvement. They are about a paradigm shift that can result in the transformation of your reality. When readers are willing to expand their awareness to a conscious way of being conveyed in the book, they can experience immense effects. Leaders are increasingly finding that they perform better as leaders at work when they become a conscious leader of their own life. Leaders have to be willing to be open to claim and own the greatness of who they are, even though they have no idea what that means or what that will look like.
What do you want the reader to get from your book?
Leaders would be able to recognize that they create themselves and their realities exactly as their thought patterns which get accrued in the mind and body, and is expressed as incoherence, turmoil, stress, and fear in their lives. This is not who they truly are. To harness conscious leadership, leaders would have to be willing to choose to claim and own their true self which is an unlimited and infinite being, and become a creator of their own life. While there are no rules for doing this, there are tools and techniques to help leaders develop and expand their conscious leadership qualities.
The information in this book will facilitate you to recognize that:
* Leadership is not just a job of the person above you in the hierarchy. You don’t need to have a job title and position to become a conscious leader.
* Conscious leadership is not just about learning to be a leader. It is about allowing your true inner leadership qualities to come forth. You will have clarity about ‘What leadership means in your life and what it would take to become a conscious leader in your own life’
* To harness conscious leadership, you must choose to claim and own your true self which is an unlimited and infinite being, and become a creator of your own life.
* The key to harnessing conscious leadership involves a shift in the way you function in the world and the way you perceive and create your reality.
* Extraordinary leaders are the ones that can lead with conscious awareness.
